What to expect and how you’ll make an impact

By joining the Wildlife Rehabilitation Initiative in Madeira, you’ll have the opportunity to volunteer in a picturesque environment, surrounded by the unique flora and fauna of the Madeira Islands. The project aims to rehabilitate injured wildlife and protect endangered species, providing you with the chance to learn about the challenges these animals face and actively participate in their recovery and conservation.

Alongside the local staff, you will assist with daily tasks, such as:

  • Rehabilitation of injured animals (assisting in medical care, feeding, and monitoring health progress);
  • Maintenance of enclosures and habitats (cleaning, repairing, and enhancing living spaces for the animals);
  • Conducting surveys and collecting data on local wildlife populations;
  • Assisting in public awareness campaigns and educational programs about wildlife conservation;
  • Participating in habitat restoration projects (planting native species, removing invasive plants, etc.).

There is so much to learn here, and many initiatives to get involved in, you just need to ask!

When joining the program in winter, you should be prepared to experience milder temperatures typical of the Madeira Islands, averaging between 55-70°F (13-21°C), and come equipped with layers and waterproof clothing. If you are planning to volunteer during summer, when temperatures range between 70-85ºF (21-29ºC), comfortable and light clothing is recommended.
